About the Sydney Marathon
The Sydney Marathon began in 2001 as a legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. After a multi-year candidacy process, it was inducted into the World Marathon Majors in November 2024 and hosted its first race as a Major in 2025, becoming the series' first race in the Southern Hemisphere.
The course
Runners start in North Sydney and cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge early in the race, then wind through the city, past parks and harbour views, before finishing in front of the Sydney Opera House. Because the race is held in late winter in Australia, conditions are usually cool.
