A short history of the Super Bowl
The first Super Bowl was played in January 1967 between the champions of the NFL and the rival AFL. The Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in what was then called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. The two leagues merged in 1970, and the Super Bowl became the NFL's championship game.
Each Super Bowl is numbered with Roman numerals, and the winning team takes home the Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the legendary Packers coach who won the first two games.
More than a football game
For many viewers, the halftime show and the commercials are as big a draw as the game. Brands debut some of the year's most expensive and talked-about ads, and the halftime performance features some of the biggest names in music.
Super Bowl Sunday is also one of the biggest food days of the year in the U.S., with wings, nachos, dips, and pizza at watch parties across the country.
