From Central Park loops to five boroughs
The first New York City Marathon was held in 1970 as a series of loops in Central Park, with just 127 starters. Organized by New York Road Runners and co-founder Fred Lebow, the race expanded to a course through all five boroughs in 1976 and has grown ever since. The 2025 race set a record with more than 59,000 finishers.
The course
Runners start on Staten Island and cross the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, then continue through Queens, over the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan, briefly into the Bronx, and back down Fifth Avenue to finish in Central Park. The bridges make the course more challenging than it looks on paper.
