How Mother's Day began
The modern American Mother's Day was started by Anna Jarvis, who organized the first official celebration in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia, to honor her own mother. She campaigned for a national holiday, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday of May as Mother's Day.
