About the London Marathon
The London Marathon was founded by former Olympic champion Chris Brasher and athlete John Disley, and the first race was held in 1981. It has grown into one of the largest marathons in the world and a founding member of the World Marathon Majors.
London is also known as the world's biggest annual one-day fundraising event, with runners raising money for thousands of charities every year.
The course
The race starts in Greenwich and Blackheath in southeast London and passes the Cutty Sark, crosses Tower Bridge at around the halfway point, and loops through Canary Wharf before running along the Thames Embankment. Runners finish on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.
