The history of Labor Day
Labor Day grew out of the labor movement of the late 1800s, when many Americans worked 12-hour days, seven days a week, in difficult conditions. The first Labor Day parade was held in New York City on September 5, 1882, organized by the Central Labor Union.
Several states adopted the holiday over the next decade, and in 1894 Congress made the first Monday in September a federal holiday, signed into law by President Grover Cleveland.
How Americans spend Labor Day
Today the long weekend is a time for final summer cookouts, beach trips, and travel. It also kicks off the college football season, and many retailers hold end-of-summer sales. According to old fashion etiquette, it is the last day to wear white until the next summer.
