How Father's Day started
Father's Day was inspired by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Mother's Day, she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. The first Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane in June 1910.
The idea spread slowly over the following decades, and in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed a law making the third Sunday in June a permanent national observance.
Ways to celebrate
Common traditions include cards, a favorite meal or backyard barbecue, and gifts such as tools, gadgets, or clothes. Many families plan an activity together instead: a round of golf, a fishing trip, a ball game, or simply a relaxed day at home.
