Africa's first Major
After two successful evaluations, the Abbott World Marathon Majors announced in June 2026 that the Cape Town Marathon would join the series, with its first race as a Major in 2027. It brings the Majors to eight races, alongside Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago, and New York.
The race moved from its traditional October date to May in 2026, when it was held on Sunday, May 24.
Running in Cape Town
The course showcases the city's mix of mountain and ocean scenery, with Table Mountain watching over much of the route. Late May is autumn in South Africa, which usually means mild temperatures for race day.
